U.S. Forest Service Campgrounds
Looking for campgrounds shaded by a multi-tone emerald forest...looking for pristine lakes, rivers, and streams...looking for spectacular mountain peaks...looking for beautiful mountain flowers such as the Colorado Columbine, Indian Paint Brush, Silver Lupine, mountain daisies and lilies...looking for a touch of western heritage...? You can find all this and more when you visit well maintained United States Forest Service Campgrounds near the historic towns of Durango, Silverton, Cortez and Dolores in Southwest Colorado.
Enjoy your days hiking, mountain biking, fishing, golfing, horseback riding, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, and river rafting. Tour old mining towns, hike up above timberline exploring old mine sites, spend a morning riding the train on the historic Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango to Silverton passing along the Animas River gorge and the western boundary of the Weminuche Wilderness Area. Spend some time experiencing the cliff dwellings and the archaeological history of Mesa Verde National Park as well as several other internationally known archaeological sites. Observe artisans producing Native American arts & crafts such as turquoise and silver jewelry, sand paintings, baskets, pottery, and rugs.
Campgrounds vary from 12 to 80 sites in size, from 6,700 ft. to 9,800 ft. in elevation, from tall timbered to open space views, and from near urban to wilderness areas. Campgrounds have water, fire grates, toilets, and many have electrical hook-ups. Most campgrounds are set in the immediate vicinity of lakes or rivers. Fees range from $10 to $16 per day with most fees in the $12 - $14 range.
